I am on a diet (In-class)

A. Summary.

1. The first speaker talked about a woman. She was bulimic. She always used the bathroom after a meal. She throws up everything she ate by sticking her finger down her throat. This is how she kept the figure. However, she ruins her metabolism. She can't eat like normal healthy person anymore. The dieting like her does not work and it ruins your health.
2. The second speaker agrees that the dieting like the first speaker mentioned is not a good idea. He has always had weight problem all his life. He learned how to eat the food he likes in moderation. So he is able to lose weight. He insist that when you are on a diet, you need to do it slowly. Just watch what you eat and exercise more but don't deprive yourself of food.
3. She has an weight problem. She knows what she has to do but she has no self-control. She used to try to lose weight like taking dieting pills and starving her self. She sees so many pretty clothes but she can't wear. Although she sees pretty clothes that she wants to buy, there is no big size for her in Korea.
4. It is hard for plus-sized woman in Korea. When you turn on the TV or go to cinema, you only see beautiful women. There are no role models in Korea for large-framed women. On the other hand, there are many over-weight celebrities in western. The westerns are more generosity to over-weight women.

B. Opinion.

I totally agree with the second person. Actually, I am very thin and I have never been on a diet. I need to put weight. However, If I were on a diet, I would do like the second speaker said. I would exercise ragularly and eat healthy food.

Please, Let Me Die ( In-class)

A. Summary.

1. He said that there were two types of euthanasia. The active euthanasia and the passive euthanasia are them. The active euthanasia is the one the patient request have their lives ended and second is the one the family of the patient request to let the patient die. The second type is legal in many part of the world. People are against in active euthanasia. These patients are in so much pain that they fear the pain more that they dead.

2. There are so many instances that people are expected to die but get well. Even though they requested to die because of the painful illness, they might change their mind later. We have to find hope for them instead of giving the option of suicide.

3. If the patient were someone he loves, he wouldn't want that person to be in so much pain. There are successful euthanasia program. Doctors do not make decisions to end patients' lives by them selves. For example, one doctor can not make a decision. He or she must seek a second opinion before performing the procedure. If patients were suffering from unbearable and constant pain then it's been merciful to help them to end their lives.

4. She said that we should focus on relieving their pain instead of helping them to die. If we allow the euthanasia, some serious problem could be happened. So we must not to allow the euthanasia.

A Scrabble Contest ( Out of class)

I was playing with Deb. She is a married woman and living in Colorado, USA. She is close 50 years old but she doesn't have any children. I asked why she doesn't have any children. "Preferred to spend time with husband and do things without children", she said. We were talking about lots of things such as trip of outside of country, hobby and different culture. She was so kind that I was impressed.
It was a good time that I was playing a game with a person who lives far away and I don't know. I might make foreign friends through this game. I will keep playing this game.
As you can see, my point(155) is not good. It seems that she knew how to get a high point at once.
However, I won the game because she lost contact in accidentally.
Anyway, I used dictionary to challenge her, but some words, which she wrote, weren't in my dictionary but they were valid when I challenged. For example, she wrote 'Noo'. What does 'Noo' mean? I have no idea yet. Could you comment it when you see this? Thank you.
Thanks for introducing this game. It might be helpful to the other students.

Corporal Punishment ( In-class)

A. Summary

Here are four people talking about the corporal punishment. The first speaker thinks that the corporal punishment is not a good idea. He said that sometimes humans are out of control and teachers are also human. If we gave them that much power, it could be abused.
The second speaker agrees with the corporal punishment. At these days, students have no manners, no respect and they don't care about anything. They know that they wouldn't be hit even if they behave badly. That makes students worse. It seems that the corporal punishment is humiliation but it is better than just keep watching bad students.
The third speaker doesn't agree with the corporal punishment. The students could think about revenge from the corporal punishment. They also might learn that violence is the best way to solve the problem.
The last speaker said that parents should be more involved and the corporal punishment is going to be up to the parents' decision. If parents are involved, teachers couldn't abuse their power and students wouldn't feel free to act out as much

B. Opinion.

I think the last idea is the good way. While I was in high school and middle school, I used to be hit by teachers. Sometimes, I didn't want to go to school because of that corporal punishment. I felt that some teachers hit us with their personal emotions.

However, I think we need corporal punishment. At these days, students are so rude and some students don't care about anything. There are no solution besides a corporal punishment.

What I want to say is that we need some laws, rules and regulations about the corporal punishment.
We also degrade students grade they behave badly.

Miss Flower Blossom Beauty Contest(In-class)

A. Summary.

She is talking about an article, which is written by Mr Right. Mr Right wrote that a beauty contest is bad because he thinks that they only look at women's appearances. However, she doesn't think as Mr Right does. She thinks that the women's body is only small part of a beauty contest. They have to be beautiful, intelligent and talented to be a winner of a beauty contest. she have won the Miss Flower Blossom Beauty Contest. She have practiced for years to be a winner. She have practiced a piano for 15 years and studied how to speak in public for four years. Indeed, One of the prizes for a winner is a scholarship to go to a university. She wants Mr Right to change his mind.

B. My Opinion.

Her opinion is not wrong. However, I don't think the women's body is a only small part of a beauty contest. I think that the biggest part of a beauty contest is their appearances. The other parts what she mentioned are only small parts of beauty contests. If she was right, why they watch the women's body with swimming suit and why they don't focus on the other parts. When I watch the contest, most parts of contests are about the appearances not the others. They just have an interview for a moment.
Some participants try so hard to be a winner just like the speaker but most participants care about their appearances.

Years of Misery(In-class)

A. Summary
Abi is a small woman with gentle smile. She seems like the nice woman who lives next door. She married with man who was gentle. He was so kind. First two years in marriage was wonderful. After two years past, he came home late and drunk a lot. Finally, he pushed her and kicked her and hit her so often. He even chocked her. Once he push her to the window, she finally killed him with a kitchen knife. Now she is in a jail to wait a trial for murder. Abi didn't tell anybody about this violence. Even if she told this to police, they did nothing but got the money from her husband. After that, he hit her more badly and often.

B. Opinion.

I think she had to do something before killing him. I know her situation but nothing justifies murder. If I was in her situation, I would run away from him instead of murder or divorce with him. Is the murder only thing she can do in that situation? I don't think so. At any rate, she killed man. She should take a proper punishment.

Adult Children(In-class)

A. Summary

They are talking about adults who live with their parents. Prof. Hasegawa, who comes from Japan, said that Japanese people call them 'parasite single' and it is growing trend. The parasite single most likely has a negative meaning. Many people think that they are selfish and they don't have any responsibilities.
Dr. Caldwell from the U.K said that they called the people, who left home once but come back home later, 'boomerang children'. In European country, many children used to leave home to be free. Nowadays, however, they don't leave home but stay home with their parents. As a result of this, the parents want to be free.

They said there are advantages in this trend. It gives children a time to think about their future more carefully and some parents want to live with their children so it makes them have stronger relationship.

B. Opinion.

I think they don't have to live with their parents but it's good for both of parents and them. It is getting difficult to buy a house in Korea. Indeed, house prices are getting expensive. If they live together, adults don't have to worry about house. For the parents, they might feel lonely if their children left home. If they live together, the parents wouldn't feel lonely.

On the other hand, Living together causes some problems. Children, who don't left home even if they got married, wouldn't have any responsibilities and they might stay as children. In a view from the parents, they won't have any freedom. They keep trying to care of them.
